Locker Rooms and Bathrooms are No-Phone Zones
To ensure the safety, privacy, and comfort of everyone at the Y, we maintain a strict no-phone policy in all locker rooms and bathrooms throughout the facility. This includes the Men's, Women's, Boys', Girls', and Family locker rooms, including the showers, changing areas, saunas, and bathrooms. These no-phone zones include no cell phones for calling, texting, photos, scrolling, web surfing, video, etc., and the use of other recording devices. Best practices include to put your cellphone away when in the locker rooms or bathrooms. This policy applies to all members, guests, visitors, and staff.
Here’s why this policy is so important:
- Compliance with State Law N.J.S.A. 2C:14-9:
In the state of New Jersey, recording devices are strictly prohibited in private spaces where individuals have a reasonable expectation of privacy, such as locker rooms, restrooms, and changing rooms. Therefore, to comply with state laws, and uphold privacy standards, the Madison Area YMCA enforces a no-phone / no-recording policy in locker rooms and bathrooms. - Protecting Privacy: Locker rooms and bathrooms are private spaces where everyone deserves to feel safe, secure, and respected, free from concerns about cameras or recordings in this shared space.
- Child Safety: This policy creates a secure environment for all members, including families and children, and helps eliminate risks associated with the inappropriate recording or sharing of images involving minors.
- Reducing Risk: A no-phone policy protects all members and our Y from potential risks related to unauthorized recordings or misuse of devices.
- Preventing Unauthorized Sharing or Posting: Even accidental photos or videos taken in locker rooms could be shared on social media or other platforms, potentially violating the privacy of others and causing harm.
We need your help and appreciate your cooperation in helping us uphold these values. Together, we can ensure that our locker rooms and bathrooms remain safe, respectful, and private spaces for all.
Violations of this policy may result in suspension or termination of membership. If you have any questions about this policy, please don’t hesitate to speak with a Y staff member.
Thank you for being a valued part of our Y community.
Where Can I Use My Phone?
Please remember, there are places, including all Fitness Areas (Fitness Center, Glasser Center, Kroll Training Annex, Mind/Body Studio, Training Studio, Indoor Cycling Studio, and multipurpose group exercise spaces) at the Family Center where we understand and encourage the use of smartphones to track fitness progress using the Madison Area YMCA’s app or other technology and to listen to music.
