Financial Assistance

One of the many valuable benefits of Madison Area YMCA membership is the availability of Scholarships. The Y is committed to ensuring that everyone in our community has the opportunity to participate in our programs, regardless of their financial situation. Through our need-based assistance program, we offer scholarships that help individuals and families access the wide range of activities and services that matter most to them—whether it’s childcare, fitness programs, summer camps, or wellness initiatives.

These scholarships are a testament to the Y's mission of fostering community and inclusivity. They are made possible through the generosity of our donors, partners, and members who believe in the power of shared experiences and the importance of health and well-being for all. By providing these resources, we can bring more people together, ensuring that everyone has the chance to benefit from what the Y has to offer—promoting a sense of belonging, fostering personal growth, and building a stronger, healthier community.

Who is eligible to receive a scholarship? 
Assistance is available to anyone who resides or works within the Madison Area YMCA service area (Chatham, Convent Station, East Hanover, Florham Park, Green Village, Madison, Millington, New Vernon, Stirling) who can provide proof of financial need whether it is due to low income, recent unemployment or downsizing, disability, divorce, etc. Applicants who live outside our service area must first attempt to apply for assistance at the YMCA that serves their area. If rejected, then the Madison Area YMCA will consider your application. (Proof of prior rejection required). 

How much financial assistance will I receive?
The YMCA uses a sliding scale based on the NJ Department of Labor gross median income table. Percentages of assistance are determined based on your family size and total household income. Special circumstances and expenses may also be taken into consideration when determining an award. We do ask that everyone pay something. Applying for assistance does not guarantee an award.

What programs do scholarships cover?
Scholarships can be applied to any program held at the Family Center. Some restrictions do apply for special services like massage, personal training, special trips, and summer camp fees. This financial assistance is applicable to programs and services at the Family Center and are not applicable to childcare fees and programs at the F.M. Kirby Children’s Center. If you are interested in assistance for child care, you must apply through the Kirby Center.

How can I receive assistance for childcare fees?
Tuition Assistance is available for childcare at the F.M. Kirby Children’s Center to cover childcare program expenses. Please call or apply in person.

How long will the scholarship last?
The length of an award depends on your circumstances. Under normal circumstances, your assistance usually lasts 1 year from the time you begin your membership. Awards are not renewed. Participants must re-apply to the Scholarship Program prior to their renewal date.

Who will see my application and financial information?
Your application and financial information are kept in absolute confidence.

Can I do anything in re-payment for this assistance?
No one is obligated to give anything in return for this assistance. However, if you wish, you can help raise money for the Y Cares Program by volunteering in the Development Office.
