(Madison, NJ) October 25, 2016 –The Madison Area YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) acknowledges November as National Diabetes Awareness Month. The Y continues to help the community prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes through its Diabetes Prevention Program.

Did you know? The number of type 2 diabetes cases continues to grow, fueled in part by a continued rise in the rate of obesity. Excess weight and inadequate exercise can increase one's risk of developing type 2 diabetes. More than 29 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. 86 million Americans have pre-diabetes; only 10 percent even know they have it. Without changing their lifestyles, 15 to 30 percent of this population will develop Type 2 diabetes within five years.
The Madison Area YMCA can help. At the forefront to combat the disease, the Y’s Diabetes Prevention Program is a “lifestyle change” program that helps adults at high risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, reduce their risk by taking steps that will improve their overall health and well-being.
Please call Diabetes Prevention Program Coordinator Ellen Kranefuss at 973.822.9622 x2310 if you are interested in learning more about the program. New sessions are continuously forming.
