(Madison, NJ) April 20, 2018 –The Madison Area YMCA will launch Healthy Hearts, a post cardiac rehabilitation and heart healthy lifestyle program on Mon., April 30.
Healthy Hearts is designed for those who have had coronary artery bypass, heart attack, PTCA or those who are at risk for heart disease. According to the Community Health Alliance of Northwestern Center New Jersey, 5.6 percent of Morris County adults reported they have heart disease, compared to the national average of 4.4 percent.
“Healthy Hearts is a cardiovascular program for those who have experienced a cardiac episode as well as those who seek guidance for a heart-healthy lifestyle to protect the heart,” said Madison Area YMCA Senior Director of Healthy Living Joe Gonsalves. “The program focuses on cardiovascular exercise, building muscle strength and working on flexibility to help heart patients maintain cardiovascular health and sustain long-term healthy habits.”
A low-fee 12-week program, Healthy Hearts is comprised of one-hour small group non-medically supervised work out sessions three times per week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Every third Friday the group will meet with the Y’s staff dietitian to discuss nutrition and food choices. Healthy Hearts is open to Y members and non-members. Participation in the program includes pre- and post-measurements. A physician’s approval is required.
Healthy Hearts will join the Madison Area YMCA's Paths to Wellness suite of community integrated health programs that include: LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, a cancer survivors’ program; The Diabetes Prevention Program; One Step, a multiple sclerosis program; Delay the Disease, a Parkinson’s disease wellness program and Enhance®Fitness, an arthritis wellness program.
