(Madison, NJ) – October 24, 2018 - The Madison Area YMCA was awarded a $10,000 grant by Allergan Foundation to support the Y in strengthening community through its youth counseling program, Project Community Pride.
“We truly appreciate Allergan’s support,” said Madison Area YMCA Senior Director of Organization Advancement Amie Herman. “The Y has focused significant attention on providing access to safe spaces for youth and teens and programs that address mental health as a component of overall health and wellness in our community. We are grateful that this grant will help ensure that children and families receive the counseling they need to live better lives.”
The National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) reports that 11% of youth have a mood disorder, an additional 8% having an anxiety disorder and 50% of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14.
Project Community Pride of the Madison Area YMCA provides no-fee, one-on-one counseling that is often supplemented with group counseling and family counseling sessions. Counselors also host school and community workshops on issues such as preventing bullying, managing family conflict and navigating teens' social pressures. In 2016, Project Community Pride provided services to 169 children and teens; the number rose to 196 in 2017.
