(Madison, NJ) July 30, 2021 – The Madison Area YMCA Board of Directors honored retiring Board Chair Scot Guempel and welcomed new Board member S. Dillard Kirby at its Annual Meeting on July 21.

The Annual Meeting, which coincided with a celebration of the YMCA’s Family Center expansion, included the election of new officers: Board Chair Jean King, Vice Chair Michael Griffin, Secretary Art Powell and Treasurer Patricia Haverland, as well as the election of Mr. Kirby.

First elected to the YMCA Board of Directors in 2008, Mr. Guempel served as chair for three years, leading the Y through its successful $10.5M capital campaign and a nearly two-year construction period to add a new eight-lane pool and 9,000-square-foot gymnasium to its Kings Road building. The new pool is planned to open by mid-August. Rather than a single opening date, the Y plans to introduce programs in the new space as well as in its existing spaces throughout the summer and into the fall.

At the July 21 gathering, Madison Mayor Robert H. Conley presented a proclamation declaring July 21 as Scot Guempel Day in Madison. A native of Madison, Mr. Guempel has been a lifelong member of the Madison Area YMCA, having also served as Board treasurer and vice chair during his tenure.

Mr. Kirby, president of the F.M. Kirby Foundation, is a longtime Madison Y member, having first learned to swim as a child at the Madison Y and continuing today as an active Y member and Master Swimmer with several local aquatics groups.

Also honored as they completed their terms on the YMCA Board were Georgeanne Limbach, who had also served since 2008; Steve Goldstein who served since 2012 and Kevin R. Smith who had served since 2014.

The Madison Area YMCA is a mission-driven charitable organization dedicated to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Generous donations make it possible for everyone in the community to be enriched by the Y, regardless of ability to pay, to develop a healthy spirit, mind and body at any age.
