A New Y Swim Lesson Curriculum to Begin this Fall at the Madison Area YMCA
The new program focuses on safety in and around the water and provides progression with a sense of achievement throughout each level. The early stages involve getting comfortable in the water and the basics and progresses to more advanced stroke-based work. The curriculum involves handouts for homework and building relationships with parents.
“The aquatics upgrade will compliment what we already do well and build upon that,” said Madison Area YMCA Aquatics Director Lisa Shannon. “The program is grounded in a skill continuum that allows students to flow easily from one stage to the next, with clearly defined stages of progress along the way.”
The new curriculum will be integrated into group swim classes starting September 10. If your child is already enrolled in the Y’s swimming lesson program, visit www.madisonareaymca.org to convert your child’s current swim level to the stage in the new curriculum. The new class names align more closely with the skills built in each stage.
The Y is America’s swim instructor. As a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening community, the Y considers it a priority and a responsibility to prevent drowning (88% of kids who have drowned were under some sort of supervision) and improve health outcomes by cultivating physical, cognitive, and social-emotional well-being through aquatics. For the last 100 years, the YMCA has taught 1 million kids each year at 2,700 YMCAs across the country in 2,200 pools how to swim.
The Madison Area YMCA is a 501©3 cause-driven charitable organization dedicated to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
