Madison High School Students Raise Awareness and Funds for the Madison Area YMCA’s Community Mental Health Initiative

(Madison, NJ) April 28, 2017 – Madison High School students raised awareness and funds for the Madison Area YMCA’s Community Mental Health Initiative (CMHI). Their $436 contribution to the Y’s Annual Campaign, designated for the CMHI, was the result of a T-shirt sale that was held in support of the borough-wide Paint the Town Yellow campaign that encouraged optimism and shed a light on depression. The students also donated $436 to the UMEWE Public Benefit Corporation.

To kick off National Mental Health Awareness Month in May, Madison High School students are encouraging everyone to wear their t-shirts from the campaign or wear yellow on May 1, 2017.

The Y’s Community Mental Health Initiative raises awareness and lowers the stigma associated with mental illness. The initiative also focuses on reducing barriers to mental health care by providing community members with knowledge and skills to enhance their ability to help. The YMCA provides opportunities to become certified in Mental Health First Aid. An evidence-based skills training course, Mental Health First Aid is designed for non-mental health professionals, preparing them to know how to help reduce the social distance between people with mental illnesses and others.

As a cause-driven charitable organization, the Madison Area YMCA is dedicated to nurturing the potential of every child and teen, and improving the community’s health and well-being and giving back by providing support to our neighbors.
